Lignano Story
The first graphic representations relating to Lignano, describe it as a dune area with a thick undergrowth of blacks pine, holly, holm oaks, a few houses and some large "Casone", refuge for fishermen in nearby Marano.
Some historical traces reveal a core group of life on the peninsula of Lignano since Roman times.
During the rule of the Venetian Republic (from 1419) Lignano was given in fief to several noble families.
In 1813, the presence on the peninsula was only 70 and until the end of the century Lignano was still a peninsula covered with pine trees, dunes and almost uninhabited. The peasants' houses stood on the opposite end of the peninsula near Tagliamento river or the lagoon, the center of the fishermen activities.
The story really begins in Lignano on 11 April 1903, when sail from Marano six boats carrying a group of journalists from Udine, Friuli politicians and administrators. Three ladies in the group planted on the beach, as a sign of good luck, sprigs of juniper, while on the sand is drawn the base of the first establishment "Bagni di Porto Lignano".
From that day the city has continued to grow and expand, particularly along the course of the '50s thanks to the entrepreneurial initiatives of individuals who gave new impetus to building and planning, becoming today one of the most popular Italian seaside resort.
